Located with the Dulwich Estate and in Dulwich Village Conservation Area, this modest Victorian cottage underwent a full refurbishment & extension.

In it, a pair of perforated brick panels connect the considered interiors with its garden.

The existing house at Calton Ave was a modest end-of-terrace Cottage in the heart of Dulwich Village.

Our client’s brief was: “Make me fall in love with this house again”. Our challenge was to create the feel of a large house without losing the intimacy of the cottage.

“From the start of the project I was involved and included. Throughout the process, any questions I had, were answered promptly, effectively, reassuringly and sensitively.”

We were keen to maximise the sense of space by connecting the rear extension with the garden by way of a corner glazed extension. The perforated brick panels modulate the view and throw patterns of light across the room.

The Large pivot door sweeps open to invite the garden into the home

In the kitchen, the black monolith juxtaposes the panelled brass wall, enlivened by the movement of light through the day.

We focussed on the little details to deliver a wonderful set of spaces that were elegant yet cost-effective.

The traditional Victorian house was transformed by inserting a modern open treaded stair that allows the light to penetrate deep into the house.

We imagined the interior of the house being a single space, subdivided or broken up by joinery to create more intimate spaces to live, cook, eat and work. Bold use of colour and materials create different atmospheres throughout the house.

” I was challenged by Ashvin to look at different ideas, concepts, and materials, some of which I would not have considered and was supported in going with them. A sign that the architect had the vision and confidence to see that the house would work not only in function but visually.. “

A dusty pink bathroom with black accents complete the bathroom.

Push past the mirrored wall in the master suite to reveal an elegant vaulted changing room.

“From the start of the project I was involved and included. Throughout the process, any questions I had, were answered promptly, effectively, reassuringly and sensitively. I had some ideas for the concept of the renovation of the house and Ashvin incorporated these ideas and developed them into a design that flows and works seamlessly and easily with designated areas within an open-plan living space. I was challenged by Ashvin to look at different ideas, concepts, and materials, some of which I would not have considered and was supported in going with them. A sign that the architect had the vision and confidence to see that the house would work not only in function but visually.

I was challenged by Ashvin to look at different ideas, concepts, and materials, some of which I would not have considered and was supported in going with them. A sign that the architect had the vision and confidence to see that the house would work not only in function but visually. His knowledge of all the legal elements of the project supported the ease of planning and construction throughout the whole process.

The site is challenging and again his vision of what would work without compromising the design was a sign of both his skill, knowledge, and professionalism. Now the project has finished and on time and within budget, I have a magnificent home both inside and out. It sits beautifully and sensitively within the site and its environment. A home in which it is a joy to live. I have no hesitation in recommending Variant Office to anyone contemplating any project.”
